'Diablo 4' release date update: Game delayed as Blizzard searches for new game director?

"Diablo 4" remains to be up in the air following the exit of game director Josh Mosqueira, who took on the same role in the current iteration of the game.

Mosqueira's departure from Blizzard Entertainment was confirmed back in July. There's no word as to whether or not the developer managed to find someone who could replace him, but the "Diablo" project started under Mosqueira's watch appears to still be on the table.

Blizzard is willing to go on with the "Diablo" franchise even without Mosqueira at the helm and has been actively looking for someone else to fill the role.

In a job listing by the company, it was suggested that "Diablo 4" might be in the works as Blizzard is looking for someone who can "lead the 'Diablo' series into the future" and be the "vision holder for the franchise."

So far, there has been no confirmation if a new game director has been hired. However, some reports say that no one is yet to take over, and that instead of a new game, "Diablo 3" downloadable content or DLC will be released instead.

Since its release in 2012, the game received only one major expansion, which is Reaper of Souls released. Blizzard reportedly wants to follow that up.

If a DLC oack is in the works, it will be high time for it to see the light of day. It took Blizzard a couple of years to put out Reaper of Souls. That might be the same timeframe fans can expect on the second one.

New reports are also suggesting that Mosqueira leaving the company meant the end of the series as he was largely responsible for the creation and success of the game.

If that is the case, "Diablo 4" might not happen at all and a DLC pack might be more likely to come out until Blizzard finds the right person to help them make a full-on successor happen.

Fans will hear more about what Blizzard has in store for the "Diablo" saga at Blizzcon 2016 this November. Hopefully, the project will finally be announced there.
