'Destiny 2' release date news: next game reported to release 2017 as reboot of franchise

"Destiny" Bungie

Game fans waiting for "Destiny's" sequel will need a little more patience, as it is not in the immediate plans of Bungie. The developer has scheduled it for a 2017 release. However, fans can look forward to "Rise of Iron," another big expansion that is set to arrive in September for the current game.

Kotaku reported that "Destiny 2" was originally scheduled to be released this year, but it has been moved to another release date slot and will now be arriving sometime next year. It was also reported that the game sequel has been rebooted, which is rumored to be the result of a staff re-organization inside Bungie. It is said that Luke Smith, the director for "The Taken King" expansion, will be taking the helm for the upcoming sequel.

The report also mentioned that the changes in the release date were mainly because of the "Rise of Iron" DLC that is set to arrive during the third quarter of the year. The rumored expansion pack is speculated to be featuring a new raid mission and will go around the idea of the "Fallen with a twist," though nobody knows yet the exact meaning of it. It is also unknown how it will link up with the existing Iron Banner PVP event.

Previous reports have mentioned that the upcoming expansion will be big, but it is not clear what the word "big" means here. It may have a bigger map, bigger content, or both.

Fans are also speculating that the game was rebooted in order to get back to the one big story arc that Bungie developed even before the company released "Halo." There is a theory that "Marathon," "Halo" and "Destiny" were all interconnected and the last game is way out of the original story, thus it is being rebooted.

Fans are expecting to hear more information on the upcoming "Destiny: Rise of Iron" at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, happening from June 14 to 16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
