Things are going to get pretty dark and serious for Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) in "Cars 3."
Earlier this week, Disney and Pixar released a brand new teaser trailer for their follow-up to "Cars 2," a video featuring an ongoing race where Lightning McQueen moves up to take the lead, only to find himself toppling over in a tragic racing accident.
Unlike the past two "Cars" films, the newly released teaser seems to set a more serious tone for "Cars 3." Not only does the featured graphics in the trailer steer clear of the kiddy art of the original "Cars" films, but the video ends with a tagline that further highlights the gravity of McQueen's accident as well.
"From this moment, everything will change," Disney and Pixar warn at the end of the teaser.
Based on the tagline, the change in art style and the serious tone of the trailer, it seems like Disney and Pixar are trying to take the "Cars" franchise into deeper waters by dealing with detrimental accidents that often happen in the playing field. However, NME reports that parents and fans haven't been taking to these shifts so well.
Because of the gravity of its teaser trailer, some fans on social media have begun to express concern that the film would not be fit for children, arguing that McQueen's accident in "Cars 3" could possibly even cause trauma for young ones. Some social media users have even gone so far as to ask parents to refrain from showing the teaser trailer for "Cars 3" to children.
Despite these concerns, the chances that Disney will keep the film light are also pretty high. After all, not only is Disney known for toning down its films to keep them child friendly but the synopsis for the film is pretty reminiscent of the other "Cars" films in the franchise.
"Cars 3" is slated for release on June 16, 2017.
