Bible Society Celebrated Their Bicentenary Anniversary

The Bible Society Movement celebrated its 200th anniversary during the second week of March.

The Ceylon Bible Society, the Sri Lanka branch of this worldwide movement, celebrated this event with events held at the Bible Society headquarters in Colombo.

The National level celebrations were marked by the cancellation of a special commemorative First Day cover by the Sri Lanka Philatelic Bureau at the Bible House board room.

Celebrations in local churches were held on March 7, focusing on children's drama based on the Story of Mary Jones. Ms.Jones pioneered the propagation of Bible reading among children. A lecture on The Impact of the Bible on the Society in Sri Lanka was a highlight of the celebrations.

A United Service at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour at Bauddhaloka Mawatha was also held. A representative gathering including members of other Christian denominations in the island attended it. The sermon at the service was given by the Archdeacon of Colombo Rev. Chryshantha Mendis.

The opening of the Rev. Basil Rajasingham Memorial Exhibition Center was opened at the Bible House basement and an Art Exhibition of exhibits from children from Colombo and suburbs was also held.

Presentation of awards to winners of the Art Competition took place on March 12.

The Ceylon Bible Society is an interdenominational organization, the main objective of which is to translate, print and distribute the Holy Bible at an affordable price among Christians in Sri Lanka.
