'Avatar 2' spoilers, plot news: James Cameron nervous about upcoming sequel

With the huge success of the first "Avatar" film, it is certainly understandable that viewers will have the same expectations, if not higher, when it comes to the sequel. Since the original movie was met with both critical and commercial success back in 2009, one would expect something similar of its follow-up installments, including a possible "Avatar 3" and "Avatar 4."

Director James Cameron has admitted that he is getting anxious over "Avatar 2" not living up to the hype that has been built around the "Avatar" franchise. In a phone interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cameron spoke of his concern regarding the sci-fi sequel.

"I'm in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now. Just refining. That's in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We've been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much [set]," he said.

When asked if production and development for the film got easier to handle the second time around, Cameron said, "No, because you have to challenge yourself. Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on 'Avatar 2,' to make sure it wasn't just some big fluke the first time. So we've got to deliver. I've created a nice rod for my own back, so they say."

However, it seems like the sequel has all the makings of another great film. Perhaps that's the reason why Cameron is bringing back two characters who apparently died in the first movie.

Dr. Grace Augustine, played by Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang's Colonel Miles Quaritch have reportedly been confirmed to return to the seocond installment. Weaver's character was thought to have died after getting shot. The Na'vi tribe had tried to transfer her consciousness to her avatar body, but she seemingly passed away before it could be completed. Lang's character, on the other hand, was struck by two large arrows. There are no details as to how he could have possibly survived an incident like that.

However, curious viewers and fans will have to wait until 2017, because that's when "Avatar 2" is slated to be released.
