While sightings of the upcoming Android N are already appearing online, some mobile flagships have yet to update to the current Android Marshmallow platform. The latest to join the Android M environment are the devices in Sony's Xperia Z series.
The global OTA updates are now rolling out to older and current flagships in the Xperia Z series. According to XperiaBlog, the base model Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact and Xperia Z5 Premium have received notifications about the update.
However, although the new Android Marshmallow already has a 0.1 version, the Xperia Z5 lineup will only get the global release of the original Android 6.0 update. For the firmware update, the Xperia Z5 family will get the latest security patches from Google.
The industry follower added that some of the features in the stock Android Marshmallow are also not included in the global Sony version, such as the Stamina mode in power management, as well as adoptable storage for those with microSD support.
Phandroid adds that aside from the new Xperia Z5 iterations, previous generations of the Xperia Z series are also lined up to receive the Android Marshmallow update. Reportedly, some variants of the Xperia Z3+ and the Xperia Z4 Tablet are now receiving OTA notifications for an automatic update to Android M. Meanwhile, those who haven't received the notifications yet can manually check their Xperia Z series devices via the Settings > About Phone tab.
The roll-out of Android Marshmallow is significant for the Xperia Z-series as it shows that Sony Mobile is still keen to update this lineup to the latest firmware and software even though the lineup is already discontinued. Amidst the speculations of an upcoming Xperia Z6, Sony Mobile announced that the Xperia Z5 family is the last in the series.
