Google is already in the final stages of development of a new Android platform. In fact, there is already a developer preview of the upcoming Android N available for users. However, most devices are still waiting for their Android M update, as tech manufacturers continue to roll out their respective Marshmallow versions.
This is particularly true for big-name industry players. For example, South Korea-based Samsung announced as early as February that the company's different lineups will receive the Android update soon. However, while Samsung has rolled out the update to global, unlocked versions immediately after the update, some Samsung flagship devices got a staggered release instead. This is because some flagship iterations are under carrier contract, and each has its own version of Android M.
The most recent release for the Android M on Samsung devices is Verizon Wireless, which rolled out its OTA notifications to subscribers using the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Meanwhile, other carriers like T-Mobile, which offers Samsung flagships like the Galaxy Note 4, are also the last ones to update to Android M.
As for staggered releases, HTC is still trying to complete its Android M rollout to its smartphone lineups. Since the release of the stock Android M ROM, only two HTC devices – the One M9 and One M8 – have received the Android M update notification. Other HTC lineups have also been confirmed to receive the Android Marshmallow update but have yet to make the transition from "confirmed" to "updated" stages.
Meanwhile, other manufacturers are also following in the footsteps of Samsung and HTC, releasing Android M on a staggered basis. Motorola, a brand recently bought by Lenovo, has yet to complete its Android 6.0.1 rollout to its flagship devices. To date, confirmed handsets set to receive Android M include most of the recent Moto G and Moto X iterations, as well as region-specific versions of Moto E. However, only the 2015 editions of the Moto X have received the update notification, and the other iterations are still waiting.
