At least one parishioner has died and another nine have tested positive for coronavirus after attending a church service in Illinois.

Over 40 people have fallen ill after attending a service on March 15 at the Life Church of Glenview, according to the pastor's wife, Layna Showalter LoCascio, in a since-deleted Facebook post.

The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed that one of the 10 who tested positive passed away on Friday.

William Rosado, 64, suffered from pancreatic cancer and his cause of death was recorded as pneumonia due to the coronavirus, reports NBC Chicago

He was one of three to have been hospitalised with coronavirus following the service at the Pentecostal church.  The other two included a guest speaker who had come from Nevada to take part in the event.

Officials are now contact tracing anyone who might have come into contact with those who attended the March 15 service.

In a statement, the church said: "We continue to keep in prayer those from our church community who became ill following our March 15th service, which had about 80 people in attendance.

"Some tested positive for COVID-19 and others have had symptoms but have not yet tested for the virus. We are thankful to learn that many are on the road to recovery and we keep in prayer those who are still fighting the virus. We are grateful for the outpouring of support from church leaders and trust God for continued healing."
