"Star Wars Battlefront" revived the old third-person multiplayer series set in the "Star Wars" universe when it was released in late 2015. A sequel has now been confirmed and gamers will be able to play it before "Star Wars Episode VIII" launches in theaters in December 2017.

According to a report from Polygon, EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen hand confirmed that the game is indeed going to launch in fall 2017.

"A year from now," he stated, with regards to the release date. "We're working very hard on making sure that is an extremely deep and engaging offering. We'll most likely have one 'Star Wars' title a year for the next three to four years."

The report further points out that EA previously stated that the game was going to roll out between April and December 2017. The new announcement from Jorgensen coincides with the previous statement, indicating that the game is on track and will launch on time.

"Star Wars Battlefront 2" is going to follow the same formula as the first game, meaning it will focus on third-person action and online multiplayer. The first game was criticized for having no single-player campaign, and one was later added into the game due to high demand. The sequel may now feature a single-player campaign right upon launch.

While EA holds the rights for future "Star Wars" video games, the report states that the developers are working on "Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-wing VR Mission." It will launch this year, just in time for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" to premiere in theaters this December.

Visceral Games is also working on their own third-person "Star Wars" game that will likely launch in 2018. Respawn Entertainment, which just launched their new game "Titanfall 2," is going to launch a third-person action-adventure game, although no specific release date has been announced yet.
