'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' reboot news: Character descriptions revealed
Weeks after it was announced that "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" is getting a reboot, producers have released a breakdown of the characters who will star in the still-untitled Netflix series.
Top on the list is lead character Sabrina Spellman, a 16-year-old half-human, half-witch, to be played by an open ethnicity actress at least 18 years old. She is on the beginning of her dark education as sorceress, but she is also trying to reconcile her dual nature as a sophomore student at Baxter High.
Sabrina is described as "intelligent, compassionate, and brave to the point of recklessness," funny, and very loyal to her family and friends. A witch who always challenges their own doctrine, Sabrina is "all that stands between us and the Forces of Darkness that threaten our world." She also has a star-crossed romance with classmate Harvey Kinkle.
Also present in the upcoming series are Sabrina's aunts. But like the overall theme of the show, their characters will be based more on the darker comics, "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina." Instead of the usual quirky aunts fans have come to know in the iconic 1990s series, the new characters will take a more ruthless side.
Hilda Spellman is described as the kindest of the lot, although her nurturing attitude hides a "more ruthless side." Aged late 30s to the early 40s, Hilda is a healer and potion-maker, who operates a funeral home to hide their sorceress nature from the world.
Zelda Spellman is Hilda's complete opposite -- a stern and tough educator who is hiding a "mothering soul," despite claims that she has never known love. She is the go-to-witch for anyone looking for a spite-jar.
Rounding up the initial cast is Ambrose Spellman, Sabrina's cousin. A necromancer, he is stuck at the funeral home because of a binding spell. A witty, mischievous and pan-sexual man, he is one of Sabrina's partners in crime.
No news yet on who will play each of the characters, but reports say the series will start filming in February in Vancouver, Canada.
The revival of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" was officially announced in early December, when it landed a 20-episode straight-to-series order on Netflix.
