Folks looking to get their hands on the Oculus Rift will likely be able to pre-order the new headset after New Year.

News of when the upcoming virtual reality (VR) headset might finally be available for pre-orders came directly from Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey via his Twitter account.

According to Luckey, the new VR headsets would be available for pre-order "soon after new year," although he did not provide an exact date. Luckey added that the Oculus Rift is still currently on track to launch within the first quarter of 2016.

Luckey also reassured prospective buyers by saying that they at the company would provide fair warning prior to actually making the pre-orders live.

Although the Oculus Rift may become available not too long after New Year, not everyone may be able to afford it.

As KitGuru reported, Luckey also hinted at the possible price of the Oculus Rift through Twitter.

Luckey hinted at the possibility that the Oculus Rift may be something that not everyone can afford to begin with. He then added that the product may become more affordable eventually, but for now, he indicated that the first iteration of the new headset may be realistic only for "early adopters."

For what it's worth, the Oculus Rift is still without an actual list price and likely won't have one until the pre-orders go live, so there's at least some hope that the figure is not too high when it is eventually announced.

Fans will have to make the final call on whether they want to pre-order the Oculus Rift, although if they do, they will also receive a copy of "EVE Valkyrie," according to IGN.

With 2016 just a few weeks away, the new year looks like it will be a big one for VR, and the Oculus Rift may get the ball rolling very quickly.
