With a heavy winter storm expected on Jan. 26, schools in New York City are expected to be open but closed for after school activities.

A weather advisory is currently up on the NYC DOE website which states: "On Monday, January 26, based on the expected storm, all after-school programs, PSAL, and evening adult education programs will be canceled. School field trips and PD for teachers will also be canceled.

"Schools will be open on Monday for the regular school day. Schools will also administer Regents exams as scheduled. "

New Yorkers have been urged to take caution and prepare for one of the worst storms this year. A snowstorm is set to hit Monday evening, bringing in up to two feet of snow.

Mayor Bill de Blasio stated: "The city's doing everything we know how to do to keep you safe." Over 500 salt spreaders have already been deployed to prepare for the snow.

Despite the storm coming, the New York City Department of Education announced that school will be open Monday and likely that schools will be closed Tuesday. Last year, heavy storms hit the city in January, but the decision to have school remaining open had been criticized by parents and teachers.

Snow is expected to fall early Monday morning and become more intense in the evening. Snow and winds up to 65 mph are expected from Monday to Tuesday afternoon.

A blizzard warning has been set for Long Island, New York City and southern Connecticut.
