'Attack on Titan' season 2 release date mid-2016; Eren leads revolution against throne

"Attack on Titan" has proven to be one of the most successful anime series in recent years, seeing two live-action adaptations hitting the big screen. But fans have been eagerly waiting for the series' second season to debut. According to a report from CrossMap, season 2 will not debut as early as speculated and will arrive in mid-2016.

The report states season 2 director Tetsuro Araki explained during a press conference for the live-action films that they would be following a particular "manga policy" that dictates they only press forward with the anime once the manga source material has at least four story arcs for them to tackle.

At the time of writing, the "Attack on Titan" manga by Hajime Isayama is only two story arcs ahead of the anime series. If the studios were to go ahead and proceed with season 2 at this point, they may catch up to the manga too quickly and may have to create filler content that could possibly conflict with the manga's direction and plot.

With that said, season 2 will not be premiering in early 2016 and instead will have to move its release date by the middle of the year.

The report does give some insight into what the second season may tackle. In particular, season 2 will explore other characters capable of turning into Titans such as Bertolt Hoover and Reiner Braun. It will also explore a revolution led by Erwin Smith and possibly Eren Yeager against the corrupted king.

Eren will once again have some of the spotlight in season 2 as he is expected to explore more of his powers. In season 1 he showed he was capable of turning into a Titan and in season 2 he will be able to harness a power known as Coordinate, which gives him control over other Titans.

More forms and types of Titans will also be revealed. Season 1 explored regular Titans as well as Colossal and Armored Titans, but speaking Titans and more are expected to debut in season 2.
