'Switched at Birth' season 5 premiere: events during time-jump to be revealed

ABC's Switched at Birth ABC Family

Although ABC Family has yet to announce an official premiere date for "Switched at Birth" season 5, a report from Ecumenical News states that the show is likely to premiere this April. Previous seasons launched in January but the delay will cause season 5 to move back a few months.

When the show does return, the premiere episode will be titled "The Call" and will directly resolve the loose plot threads from the season 4 finale. This assures that the premiere episode will answer why the girls were called back home after spending nearly a year in Hong Kong.

Speaking to TVLine, series creator Lizzy Weiss also stated that the events that occurred during those ten months will be revealed as well.

"We just really wanted to add a cliffhanger so that, if we were lucky enough to come back, we'd have something to jump off of. And it felt natural to jump them a little bit, to take them into their futures." Weiss explained. "All will be revealed. There's a lot of stuff that we're talking about, and whenever we're back on, you'll get your answers."

Weiss continued to explain that Daphne's (Katie Leclerc) choice to return to school or not will be revealed, as well as what happened to Bay's (Vanessa Marano) parents during the time that the girls were gone. She even stated that season 5 may even include more time-jumps if necessary.

In an interview with The Wrap, Weiss did state that it was necessary for the girls to stay in Hong Kong for as long as 10 months instead of the expected 6-week vacation as this would be enough time to realistically establish how Daphne got a job and how Bay is able to speak a little Mandarin. This may also play into their plans for what happened back home.

"Switched at Birth" season 5 has no official release date but is expected to air this April.
