'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' plot news: New-generation Skywalker to emerge?

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens Disney/LucasFilm

Though there will be new generation of characters in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says that the Skywalker legacy will continue to be the center of the upcoming film and basically the whole Saga of "core" movies from the franchise.

"The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga," Kennedy told Costco Connection, a free magazine published by the retailer. "The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films," she went on to say.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will be a direct follow-up to "Return of the Jedi." Kennedy says the much-awaited film will still follow through with the "generational story." Media outlets believe that this remark means that a new member of the Skywalker family will emerge in the film.

As established in all six "Star Wars" movies, the people belonging to the clan that fans have met so far include Luke, Leia and Anakin aka Darth Vader. It is being said that this new-generation Skywalker will turn out to be Rey, who is rumored to be the daughter of Han Solo and Leia.

Just recently, Rey was classified both a Rebel and a Jedi in leaked trading cards with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" characters. This, needless to say, adds weight to speculations that Daisy Ridley's character will be another Skywalker whom fans will get to meet in the most talked about intergalactic spectacle.

It remains to be seen where the Skywalker story will take fans this time but it sure will be a glorious moment to check back in on the family introduced to sci-fi fans and movie buffs more than three decades ago.

Meanwhile, Kennedy also talked about the "Star Wars" spinoffs they call Anthology films. These movies will, she says, "offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe."

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits the big screen on Dec. 18.
