Apple launched its latest iPhone 5S smartphone last month, but to the disappointment of fans, the design of the phone and display size did not change. This led to rumors that Apple will finally launch a phablet-like device with a much bigger screen size some time next year.

Initial rumors had pointed to a March 2014 release date, but that is too soon for a new hardware launch for Apple. Another date points to the summer of 2014, with other rumors pointing to the fall of next year.

The latest specs rumor suggest that Apple will finally increase the display size from 4 inches to at least a 5 inch screen, making it on par with its competitors Samsung and HTC.

Like the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 6 is expected to pack a 64-bit processor with dedicated M7 chip. It is expected to double its storage size up to 128GB. The processor by that time will most likely be upgraded to an A8 from the A7 which is currently installed on the iPhone 5S.

A new feature would be the gaze detection technology in its camera and the automatic shut off of the device when the user averts their eyes from the screen.

While some rumors state that the next-gen phone may pack a screen as big as 6 inches to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, many believe it will be upgraded to a 4.8 /5inch display.

This year, Samsung launched its third-generation Galaxy Note 3 phablet alongside with the new Gear smartwatch, which works as a companion to Galaxy devices.

Apple is also rumored to launch an iWatch compatible with the iPhones. Some reports state that it would launch alongside the iPhone 6 next year, but that is merely just speculation and Apple will most likely hold a separate media even to launch any new hardware. The screen may also feature the Sharp IGZO technology, and NFC (near field communications) technology, which is available on Samsung Galaxy devices.

The sales figure for the iPhone 5S remains high and Apple announced that it is the best-selling iPhone to date. The gold iPhone 5S has been sold out everywhere, with new stock not available until November or later. A gold-colored option will likely be as successful as the iPhone 5S.
