Now that two smartphone heavyweights have released their flagship phones for the year, all eyes are on Apple to see when the company will be releasing its flagship device.

On March 25, HTC announced the launch of its flagship phone , the HTC One M8, at a simultaneous press conference in New York City and London.

The Taiwanese smartphone giant unveiled its best smartphone to date- packed with 90 percent aluminum casing, 5 inch super LCD3 1080p display, Rear Duo Camera with Ultrapixel & 5 megapixel front facing camera, 2 GB RAM, 2600 mAh battery and ultra slim design.

The company also announced that customers will be able to purchase the handset instore at any Verizon store in the United States. The Verizon press release states: "The new HTC One (M8) will be available starting at 1pm EDT today online and in stores for $199.99 with a new two year activation. Customers looking to get their hands on the device in a store, and purchase one to take home, can do so starting today as in-store availability is exclusive to Verizon Wireless stores through April 9. For a limited time, customers who purchase the new HTC One (M8) for $199.99 can get a second one free, each with new two year activation."

In February, Samsung unveiled its latest Galaxy S5 smartphone at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The S5 does not come with metal casing, but sticks to its signature plastic casing. Packed with a 16megapixel rear camera with HD video, 2800 mAh battery, 5.1 inch 1920 x 1080 HD display, 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB RAM, Samsung's flagship is among the best smartphones available today.

Will Apple trump Samsung and HTC with its latest smartphone? Rumors point to two possible iPhone models being released in 2014. One such model would pack a much desired bigger screen, and is rumored to launch in August or September this year.

There have been rumors that a 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch phablet will be launched by Apple this year.

The larger of the phones, dubbed iPhone 6, is expected to pack a large high-resolution display, improved 8 megapixel camera, sapphire glass display, A8 processor with dedicated M8 chip, 4GB RAM and 128 internal storage.
