Fans of "Grey's Anatomy" grieved with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) when her husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) passed away in season 11. But there is also another woman in Derek's life who was greatly affected because of his untimely death.

Amelia, Derek's younger sister, not only lost her brother but she also lost the person who took care of her when she was growing up.

Actress Caterina Scorsone recently talked with Design & Trend about her character. Scorsone mentioned that she is hoping to see Amelia having more joy and laughter in the upcoming season after everything that happened to her and her family in season 11. According to the actress, Amelia is actually a fun-loving character in the "Grey's Anatomy" spin-off "Private Practice."

"This year on Grey's, so many tragic things happened that we only got a very small glimpse at that side of her personality because it was mostly kind of mired in all of the tragedy. My hope is that next year we'll get to see the lighter sides of her a little bit more," the actress said.

Scorsone also said that Amelia and Meredith could have a deeper relationship in "Grey's Anatomy" season 12. Since both characters lost a very important man in their lives, they need to stand beside each other for support.

"They are, actually, the two people who were most deeply affected by his death. The need to come together and be sisters, be the sisters that they are so they can help each other," she said.

However, things may not be that easy for Amelia and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). Scorsone believes that the former couple will continue contemplating what could have been for the two of them, but they will not act on it.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will premiere on Sept. 24 on ABC.
