Cathedral plays host to Lynne Broberg's botanical pictures

Lichfield Cathedral will be the venue in May for artist Lynne Broberg and a display of botanical pictures and landscapes.

Lynne is one of Staffordshire’s best known artists, recognised worldwide for her highly detailed and vibrant botanical pictures and landscapes.

Lynne has over 40 images in print. Her intricate paintings of flowers and fruits are painted directly from life with no preparatory drawing, often using a magnifying glass and single hair brush.

These capture each botanical subject in all its stages so everything from lush petals to dying leaves is a portrait of beauty.

Her rural scenes in pencil draw inspiration from the contrasting landscapes and hill farms of her childhood in Wales and life in the heart of the Staffordshire countryside. An understanding of anatomy, form and texture is shown in her animal drawings bringing them to life and expressing their character.

Lynne trained at Wimbledon School of Art and The Institute of Education, London University, which led to an early career teaching art. Her work has been acclaimed in numerous books and magazines and she has exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show for 14 years. Her paintings and commissions can be seen in commercial galleries and private collections across the world.

The works in this exhibition have been selected from over 1,000 digitally generated images and 150 paintings, collages and reliefs. Most of the works are in small scale – a deliberate decision based on a solution to storage problems.

Lynne reflected on her work: “I like to capture the way flowers move and turn to the light and to show the parts often not noticed, the backs of leaves and flowers, buds and seeds, the dying flower - it too has a beauty. The effervescence and cycle of life is all there.”

The ArtReach exhibition will run from the 1 to the 14 of May and will be on display during cathedral opening hours (weekdays 7.30am until 6.15pm, Saturdays 8am until 6.15pm and Sunday 7.30am until 6.30pm). Entrance to the Cathedral is free of charge but donations are welcome.
