'Person of Interest' season 5 episodes 13 spoilers: Finale leaves door open for a spin-off

CBS

"Person of Interest" season 5 episode 13 will officially end the series as it has been cancelled instead of being renewed for another season. Despite this, a report from TV Guide points out that the finale may leave the doors open for a potential spin-off.

Actor Michael Emerson, who plays Harold Finch on the show, revealed that the finale episode will see several main characters killed off. There will be survivors but he did note that there won't be many, indicating that if a spin-off or sequel were to happen it would involve a new cast instead of bringing back the original group.

"The ending, I thought, was really satisfying - and still ever so slightly open-ended, so that if someone, someday wanted to reboot this thing, or have a Chapter 2 of some sort, it wouldn't be out of the question," Emerson told TV Guide at the time.

It is further revealed in the official synopsis, via Cartermatt, that the finale will involve the final between the Machine and the Samaritan. Fans speculate that while the group and the Machine will be able to stop the Samaritan from taking over, it is possible that the Machine itself will be destroyed, with a few remaining pieces left so it may be rebuilt in a spin-off series.

Cartermatt also points out that this is going to be the riskiest and most dangerous mission for the group but it will bring everyone together, particularly Shaw (Sarah Shahi) who was kidnapped in a previous season. Whoever survives the ordeal may become the potential lead character in a spin-off.

In the report from TV Guide it is also hinted that if a spin-off series could not be finalized there is the potential of "Person of Interest" being rebooted in the future, although there are no concrete plans at the time being.

"Person of Interest" season 5 episode 13 airs this June 21.
