With U.S. Election Day just around the corner, Indiana Governor and Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence is calling on fellow Americans to do the best thing they could ever do: Pray.

"It'd be a good time to pray for this country, in the next four weeks," the running mate of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump told a campaign rally in Newton, Iowa last week, CNS News reported.

"I would encourage you, if you are inclined to do as the Pence family does from time to time, to bow the head and bend the knee," said Pence, a devout evangelical Catholic.

The Indiana Governor encouraged fellow Americans to have faith and pray specifically for America. "Pray that America will once again stand tall, stand strong," he said.

He quoted Civil War President Abraham Lincoln who called America "the last best hope of earth," saying that, "it's still true."

Pence called on fellow Americans to "humble themselves" before God, assuring them that "He will heal our land" and that America will remain "one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all."

Over a week ago, Pence also talked about praying—his own prayer for Trump's family following the release of a video showing the GOP presidential candidate making lewd remarks on women, People reported.

"We pray for his [Trump's] family and look forward to the opportunity he has to show what is in his heart when he goes before the nation tomorrow night," said Pence, referring to the second presidential debate that was held on Oct. 9 at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri

Pence admitted that he was offended by Trump's taped lewd comments about women. "I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them," he said.

But the Indiana governor also underscored that Trump has already expressed remorse and apologised to the American people for what he said in an unguarded moment back in 2005.

The Associated Press earlier reported that Pence was "beside himself" when the Trump hot mic tape was leaked.

The AP's source also added that Pence's wife, Karen Pence, was "furious."
