"Marco Polo" season 2 ended on a sudden cliffhanger, leaving audiences uncertain whether or not Kublai Khan (Benedict Wong) survived and what would happen to the titular Marco Polo (Lorenzo Richelmy). According to a report from Ecumenical News, the series might get a third season based on hints by series creator John Fusco.

According to the report, Fusco posted via Twitter an image of Kublai Khan and Hundred Eyes (Tom Wu) with the quote stating "We're not done, Monk. Me and you, we're not done." It has been speculated that this means the show is not yet cancelled despite the fact that Netflix has yet to officially announce its renewal for season 3.

However, if the show does move forward it is speculated to be the last due to the possibility of Benedict Wong no longer returning or due to the series creator attempting to give the series proper closure before it gets cancelled with an incomplete ending.

The report states that one of the reasons why Netflix has not yet made an official announcement is due to a few behind-the-scenes concerns about the show's budget. Season 1 in particular cost approximately $90 million to make and season 2 is speculated to be even more expensive due to its larger scope.

It is undetermined at this point if season 3 is going to get a similar budget or if Netflix is attempting to cut the budget down in response to reviews and viewer ratings. This can be difficult to pinpoint given that Netflix does not release details regarding the performances of their shows.

It is further explained in the report that even if the show is getting renewed it is likely going to be delayed until late 2017 before it premieres on Netflix. This would give it a fall or winter 2017 premiere and because of scheduling delays, Wong might not return as Kublai Khan, which is likely why the character's fate was not immediately revealed in the season 2 finale.
