Speculations say that a sequel to the successful "Injustice: Gods Among Us" is currently in development and may be released some time next year.

According to Event Hubs, a French website recently posted an article hinting at a possible "Injustice: Gods Among Us 2." The sequel is reportedly already in development since it is also hinted that the upcoming gaming is already set for a May 2017 release.

Developer NetherRealm Studios has yet to comment on the rumor. However, the studio's Ed Boon has already come out with some teasers for the possible sequel before, saying in a previous interview, "We're really kind of defining this new game. We're hoping that this is going to be a franchise and have a series of games."

However, most fans know that Boon is a perennial prankster, especially on social media. On the other hand, he is also known to leak confirmed details ahead of official announcements from time to time.

With the studio busy with continuous updates and expansion content for "Mortal Kombat X," as well as coming out with "Mortal Kombat XL" and a possible "Kombat Pack 3," a 2017 release for a current project is certainly possible. In addition, the time period is just right, since "Injustice: Gods Among Us" was released way back in 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The current title is the "Ultimate Edition" version released for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

"Injustice: Gods Among Us" is a successful take on an alternate world for DC superheroes. In the game, The Joker unleashed an atomic bomb in Metropolis, killing Lois Lane and Superman's baby. The Man of Steel then sought to take the law into his own hands, establishing a benevolent dictatorship with him as the High Councilor. Batman opposes this move, leading a renegade group of superhero "rebels" against the World Government.
