'Frozen 2' release date not until 2018; What to expect for Disney's movie releases

Elsa from FrozenDisney

"Frozen 2" was recently announced during a Walt Disney shareholders event but it does not look like the company is going to rush the sequel out the door just because it's the hot thing right now. As cited by the Latino Post, Disney CEO Robert Iger stated that they were "not demanding speed, we're demanding excellence."

New reports indicate that the film won't be hitting theaters until 2018. This is not simply due to the schedules of the talents involved, including Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, but also because of the company's current slate of films scheduled for release.

The next Walt Disney Animation Studios movie scheduled for release is "Zootopia," hitting theaters in March 6, 2016. This will then be followed by "Moana" in November 23, 2016. "Giants" and an untitled Walt Disney animation film is schedueld for 2018.

Pixar Studios, owned by Disney, also has their schedule for films such as "Good Dinosaur" and "Inside Out." Since these films are also owned by Walt Disney, the company would not want to release "Frozen 2" simultaneously with these films since that would over-saturate the market and cause their own products to compete against each other.

Given that "Frozen" was released in 2013 and "Frozen Fever" in 2015, fans have speculated that "Frozen 2" may come out either in 2018 or in 2017, a year where it would only have to fit in with the live-action adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast" and "Toy Story 4."

Another rumor, as reported by VCPost, is that "Frozen 2" may incorporate the character of Jack Frost as Elsa's love interest. However, this may not be the same Jack Frost featured in the film "Rise of the Guardians" since that movie is owned by a different company. If Walt Disney pushes with this then it is likely they will come up with their own rendition of the folklore character.
