Psalm 46:1-2

I love reading the Psalms - the imagery and vividness of how the poets and psalmists detailing what God and His work truly is. Psalm 46:1-2 seems to be one perfect example of how we capture the essence of who God truly is and what He is capable of.

Being citizens of the Philippines, me and my family live in the Pacific Ring of Fire which means more frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. There aren't many volcanoes where I'm from but we do get a lot of earthquakes. So much so that we've actually gotten used to them. Some weeks back, we were watching a movie in our living room when we felt the room start to quake. No one, not even my four-year-old, moved a muscle.

I know other people from other places would have started panicking or running under tables, but we just sat there. That's the picture the psalmist gives us in this powerful scripture, but of even greater magnitude: "Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea."

Can we truly trust God at all times? I think the question is not much about whether we can or cannot, but rather whether we will or will not. We can definitely not trust God at times and trust instead in other things - money, career, relationships, even pastors. But all these fail in comparison to what God can do in the greatest of challenges.

What will our money, career, relationships and pastor be able to do when the earth starts to tremble? Money will stay money, your career will stay a career, and your relations and pastors will probably be just as or even more frantic than you. But there is a God who remains unchanging and unmoved in times where we are most distressed.

God is a refuge unlike any other. It doesn't mean that trouble won't come when He's in our life, but it does mean that we can run to Him and be safe. Proverbs 18:10 says, "The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe."

Can you trust God at all times? Can you train yourself to focus on who He is and what He can do so that we will put our faith and trust in Him?
