'Borderlands 3' release date: Next installment will take a while to launch

While there's already a number of spin-off titles set in the "Borderlands" world, fans may need to wait a bit longer for a proper sequel, "Borderlands 3."

Earlier this year, IGN reported that developer Gearbox Software is currently in the process of building future "Borderlands" titles. However, it was unclear if the titles are in any way connected to "Borderlands 3." Speaking to the industry follower, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford was sure of one thing – "Borderlands 3" may be far in the future.

When asked if a proper sequel will be released soon, Pitchford answered, "It depends on how you define soon. There'll almost certainly be more Borderlands, but we need to figure out what that is."

Pitchford added that while there may be a proper sequel it the future, it may not be considered the third installment in the series' story.

The Gearbox Software CEO added, "And why would it be called Borderlands 3? What if it's Borderlands 4 – there's already been three Borderlands games. What if it's Borderlands 5? What we call it and what it is are things we care about and we're engaged about but it would be irresponsible to share anything at this stage, because almost certainly anything we're thinking now is going to change between now and when we commit ourselves."

Meanwhile, another industry follower also stated a while back that the next, proper "Borderlands" sequel will be seen together with the follow-ups to current-gen consoles. In a report earlier this year, Gamespot said that Gearbox is developing the "next big one" specifically for next-gen consoles.

While waiting for the next installment, publisher 2K Games recently released some new bundles for the spin-off titles based on the massive "Borderlands" world. "The Borderlands Triple Pack" comes with copies of all the previous titles -- the original "Borderlands," the sequel "Borderlands 2," and "Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel."

Aside from the three titles, the new triple-game bundle also carries all the DLC and expansion packs for the three games.
