'The Blacklist' season 3 premiere spoilers: Liz on the run with Red with a new look

Liz (Megan Boone) dyes her hair blonde in the upcoming season of "The Blacklist."NBC

The season premiere of "The Blacklist" will feature Liz (Meghan Boone) joining Red (James Spader), as both of them are now on the FBI's most wanted list. After Liz murdered Tom Connolly in season 2, she was forced to flee the city with the FBI hot on her heels.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Jon Bokenkamp said that the pair's first objective is to get out of Washington D.C.

"Step 1 is to get out of D.C., which is a city that is designed to be able to be locked down in an incredibly short time," he told the website. "Things go wrong."

As a way to confuse the FBI, Liz gets a brand new look, and in an exclusive photo shared on EW, the former agent is seen sporting blonde hair. Her new hair will also make her realize something about her identity.

"She ends up realizing that she may look like her mother," said Bokenkamp.

The executive producer explained that the character's new look is a way to connect the fact that they are hiding from the FBI to "the mythology of who Liz is."

In season 2, it was revealed that Liz's real name is Masha Rostova and that she had a hand in a man's death, with the man assumed to be her father. Her mother is an ex-KGB member named Katarina Rostova, and her ties to Red may finally unlock the mystery between Liz and Red's relationship. Since the first season of the show, it has been speculated that Red is Liz's father.

Season 3 will also feature a new villain, so aside from hiding from the FBI, Liz and Red will have to deal with an "unassuming and soft-spoken" man named Mr. Solomon, whose calm manner belies his appetite for violence. Mr. Solomon will be played by "X-Men: First Class" star Edi Gathegi.

"The Blacklist" season 3 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 9 p.m. on NBC.
