Why Dating Is as Much About Being 'the One' as Finding 'the One'

I once had this shirt that read, "I'm not a hopeless romantic. I'm a hopeful one."

Many single men and women are out on that hope-filled search for the person they will spend forever with. I was not the most diligent searcher, but by some miracle, you could say that I "stumbled upon" love when I least expected it.

The time I met my wife Ces was the season when God was dealing with my character. Ces caught a whiplash of it, but fortunately when she met me I was ready. I can't imagine how bad things could have gone if I was the same person I was six month prior to meeting her. She would have probably gone running out the door. It was God's sovereign time that I had worked on being right with God before being right for someone else.

Today many people are out there searching for love and romance to no avail. Bachelors and bachelorettes sometimes dedicate all their efforts in finding the one.

But should that be all they should be focusing on when searching for love? Searching for the one matters, yes, but so does becoming the one for the one.

Andy Stanley once said, "We should become the person that the person we're looking for is looking for." Our quest for romance can often blind us in the sense that we stop looking at the mirror because we're too busy looking through a telescope in search for our promised romance. Finding romance has just as much to do with being the Christ-like person that God wants you to be so that when you meet the one, you can point each other to Christ.

I never really thought of James 1:23 as a romantic verse, but reading it in the context of this thought really opened my eyes to a greater revelation of God's design of love. The verse says, "For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror."

The best way to be the one is to take a good look in our "mirror," which is the Word of God. If you're not a man of the Word, then chances are you won't be the man of anyone's dreams. That's because the only way to be the one is to know the One who fulfills all romance and love between two people.

The first step to being the one and finding the one is knowing Christ, the one who makes all love complete. How much do you know Christ? The more you know Jesus, the more you will know yourself how you can be the one for others and consequently find the one whom God has prepared for you.
