'The Legend of Zelda' Wii U news: No 2016 release date confirmed for the game

The long awaited "Legend of Zelda" game for the Wii U remains without an official release date.

This was the recent revelation discovered after Nintendo released their prospective lineup of games coming to the 3DS and the Wii U for next year.

"The Legend of Zelda" game for the Wii U does indeed make an appearance in the list of games, but what isn't shown is an official release date for it. Instead, what fans will see is a big "TBD" under the launch date heading for the game, Shacknews reported.

With the game given the TBD designation, that basically means that all bets are off as to when the game might actually come out. In theory, "The Legend of Zelda" for the Wii U could still be announced at such a time that it would still be realistic to expect a 2016 release date, or Nintendo could also decide to sit on it for a bit longer and perhaps even delay it all the way up to 2017 or even later than that.

Recently, there's also been chatter online that the Wii U title may be delayed to the point that Nintendo may just decide to not release it for the console altogether, according to Design and Trend. Instead, what Nintendo could decide to do is to hold off on the Wii U version of "The Legend of Zelda" entirely and just release it as one of the big name titles coming to their new NX console.

For now at least, Nintendo has given no indication that they have given up on "The Legend of Zelda" for the Wii U.

In an interview with Gamespot, "Legend of Zelda" series producer Eiji Aonuma said that the Wii U title of the franchise was not affected at all by the company recently releasing "The Legend of Zelda: TriForce Heroes."

The mere fact that people involved with the franchise are still openly talking about the Wii U title is at the very least an indicator that they are still putting work into it and that it could still come out for the console at a later date.
