Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz does not like the way sports channel ESPN handled Curt Schilling's controversial Facebook post regarding North Carolina's transgender bathroom law, and even thinks it was complete "lunacy" for them to fire him for it.

Cruz does not understand why the network would fire Schilling, who had been with them since 2010, simply for making the "rather obvious point that we shouldn't allow grown male adult strangers alone in a bathroom with little girls."

"That's a point anyone who is rational should understand," Cruz told radio host Glenn Beck, according to the Gospel Herald. "You have got the Obama education department suing to try to force [middle schools] to let teenage boys shower with teenage girls. That's crazy. That is not a reasonable position.

"It is simply crazy and the idea that grown men would be allowed alone in a bathroom with little girls - you don't need to be a behavioural psychologist to realise bad things can happen and any prudent person wouldn't allow that. It is only the lunacy of political correctness," he continued.

The issue all started when Schilling earlier posted a photo of a heavy-set man wearing a wig and women's clothing with parts of the T-shirt cut out to expose his breasts. It says: "LET HIM IN! to the restroom with your daughter or else you're a narrow-minded, judgmental, unloving racist bigot who needs to die."

He explained in the caption that the photo represented merely "my opinion, 100% mine, and only mine. I don't represent anyone but myself here, on Facebook, on Twitter, anywhere."

But ESPN did not appreciate his humour, and promptly fired him for it. "ESPN is an inclusive company," the company said in a statement. "Curt Schilling has been advised that his conduct was unacceptable, and his employment with ESPN has been terminated."

Meanwhile, Cruz's opponent Donald Trump sees no issue in letting people use public bathrooms based on their preferred gender. He even said that if Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner) visits Trump Tower, he would be free to use any bathroom he chooses.
