'Spider-Man' movie reboot cast news: Matthew McConaughey as Norman Osborn?

Norman Osborn aka the Green GoblinMarvel Comics

Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey is being offered scripts from both Marvel and DC, according to a report from Variety. A new report from The Hashtag Show states that Marvel, in particular, is offering the role of Norman Osborn a.k.a. The Green Goblin to McConaughey.

As pointed out in a report from ComicBook.com, The Hashtag Show is a relatively unknown source but it does have a reliable track record with its accurate reports regarding the fate of Quicksilver in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and when the site reported a change in the "Avengers" lineup, which turned out to be true.

If McConaughey takes on the role of Norman Osborn, then he would be the third actor to do so. William Dafoe portrayed the villain in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" in 2002, and Chris Cooper in the Marc Webb-directed "Amazing Spider-Man 2" in 2014 (although Cooper only played the role while Dane DeHaan played his son, Harry, who eventually became that movie's Green Goblin).

Fans also note that the timing of Marvel's offer might give some insight on what to expect in the upcoming "Captain America: Civil War." In the comics, Norman Osborn played a crucial part in the war between Iron Man and Captain America when he was tasked to lead the Thunderbolts.

It may be possible that Norman Osborn will not be prominently featured in "Captain America: Civil War" but his company might, or it is possible that Osborn appears but the Green Goblin does not, simply setting the stage for the solo "Spider-Man" film scheduled to hit theaters in 2017.

McConaughey was once known for his comedic roles but started a resurgence starting in 2011 when he took on more dramatic roles in "The Lincoln Lawyer," "Mud," "The Wolf of Wall Street," "Interstellar," and "Dallas Buyers Club," the last of which won him the Academy Award for Best Actor.

"Captain America: Civil War" hits theaters on May 6, 2016 while the new "Spider-Man" will be released on July 28, 2017.
