BBC has finally confirmed "Sherlock" Season 4. But when will it air? That one isn't confirmed yet. However, there's one , more or less, sure thing right now—A Christmas special.

Martin Freeman told Telegraph about the Christmas special, saying "If that's going to be a special - I'm speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I'd get fired - I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That's what I understand." The Christmas special is said to be released Christmas of 2015.

Martin said it "looks pretty likely" that filming for the one-off special will happen in early 2015, but the season 4 will be shown in Christmas 2016. Well, this really isn't a shocker because there have been huge gaps in between the past seasons. To add, lead stars Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch are in demand right now that the two can't resume work on "Sherlock" until next year, reports Telegraph.

Freeman said that they want to stick as close to the original version of the story, the one that Conan Doyle wrote. "While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. So he [Watson] gets married, and then Mary dies - so at some point, presumably she'll die," he said, describing his wife Amanda Abbington's role in the show.

According to Screen Rant, "Sherlock" co-creator Steven Moffat confirmed that season 4 will pick up two years after the release of season 3. The one-off Christmas special will premiere first. The one-off special will consist of three 90-minute episodes.

What does Moffat have to say about season 4? Nothing much. He just shared, "We're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect." What could that be?

Fellow "Sherlock" co-creator Mark Gatiss also provided some teasers for season 4 and the Christmas special. His statement goes "Series Four! At last! It's always special to return to Sherlock but this time it's even more special as we're doing... a Special! Not only THAT, we'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on – again!"

While filming for the Christmas special may start on January 2015, filming for season 4 may start months after it, says Screen Rant.
