It has already been confirmed that gaming industry giant Nintendo is hard at work developing a new console. However, details about the upcoming NX have so far eluded fans.

However, one of the confirmed details about the upcoming system is that it will be an additional console to the current lineup.

Previously, it was reported that the NX will be a next-gen platform and will allegedly replace the Wii U. Nintendo's current-gen console was released in November 2012.

According to Yibada, instead of a replacement, the Nintendo NX is an additional console selection for Nintendo fans. In addition, the upcoming system is also intended as a hybrid console/handheld gaming platform. In this aspect, the NX can also be considered as an alternative to the 3DS.

The handheld part of the NX remains a rumor, since Nintendo declined to comment on anything associated with the upcoming device. However, speculation of Nintendo apparently applying a patent for a handheld/controller hybrid was seen, prompting guesses that the NX is an entirely new concept to combine console and mobile gaming. In addition, Nintendo has already partnered with DeNA, a known mobile gaming title developer, and it was confirmed that Nintendo is already developing its own lineup of mobile games.

Meanwhile, Nintendo had said that it will only release details on the upcoming NX system starting early next year. However, although details about the new Nintendo console are still scant, developers who are interested in the new console are lining up.

Express UK reported that some of the titles which fans expect to be ported to the NX include the "Super Mario" franchise, and a game title from The Pokémon Company. Spike Chunsoft, Square Enix, and others have also expressed desire to develop titles for the upcoming platform, particularly if the new NX will support VR gaming.
