With Apple's recent launching of its highly anticipated gadgets, including the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus and the Apple Watch, the spotlight has now been turned to the MacBook Air laptop that has been said to undergo a major upgrade in 2015.

According to Cult of Mac and A Tech Website, the tech giant will be launching a 12-inch MacBook Air that comes with retina display and will be made available in three colors: slate gray, silver and gold. The upcoming MacBook will then have colors that are similar to those of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

If confirmed by Apple, this will be the first time that MacBooks will be offered in various colors aside from the usual aluminum gray. Moreover, a 27-inch Mac with 5K retina display is also reportedly in the works and may be released late this year. Such model is expected to go well with the other "Ultra HD" panels that are to be made available before 2014 ends.

Providing customers with increased options for customization has become a common approach for Apple, such as with the Apple Watch and the new iPhone handsets.

Cult of Mac has noted that offering the MacBook Air in different colors is highly possible, considering Apple's capabilities.  It said that the "same anodizing process used to make aluminum iPhone backs gray and gold would work just as well on the MacBook unibody clamshells."

Aside from a range of colors, the 12-inch MacBook Air with retina display is likely to include an extra-thin chassis along with a trackpad, but with the absence of a mechanical button.  It might also have a fanless design due to the latest 14-nm Intel Broadwell chips.  And there is a possibility that it will be released by mid-2015.

Currently, the MacBook Air sells for $899 at 11 inches and $999 for 13 inches.
