The third-generation Moto X is likely to arrive in the third quarter of the year.

On March 25, Motorola's president Rick Osterloh answered questions from his Twitter followers as part of the company's #AskRickO Q&A session. When asked if the next Moto X would follow its predecessors' time frame, he said that "we try to stay on a roughly annual cycle for all of our products including Moto X."

The first Moto X was released in August 2013, while the second version was launched in September last year. Thus, in keeping with Motorola's enterprise of a yearly cycle for their product lineup, the upcoming Moto X (3rd Gen) could be released in August or September.

In terms of specs, Motorola, together with its partner Qualcomm, revealed early this year that most of the new products of the company might be powered by the latest Snapdragon 810 processor from Qualcomm.

According to Osterloh, "The Snapdragon 810 processor will enable us to push the boundaries even further so we can continue delighting our customers with devices that give them new choices."

However, Osterloh did not specifically indicate if the Moto X 2015 will carry the 810 series of chipsets. In addition, there are reports saying that without proper CPU handling, the 810 processors are prone to overheating. On this matter, observers note that Motorola's next flagship would do well to use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 815 or 820 processors instead.

It is expected that other specs of the third-generation Moto X would include a higher RAM and the latest Android operating system, 5.1 Lollipop, housed in a chassis that would be designed to strike a balance between premium look and sturdy construction. This would give the new Moto X an edge to go toe to toe with other flagships, most notably Samsung's S6, LG's G4, HTC's M9, and the Sony Xperia Z4.
