Are Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez friends again?

The former Disney stars have been best friends since they were very young, but over the recent years, the two appeared to have had a falling out for reasons unknown to this day. Although Gomez and Lovato never feuded in public or in social media, they have not been seen together in recent years either, to the dismay of their fans. However, Seventeen reports that Lovato just followed Gomez on Instagram this week, and many think that this could be a sign that they are about to rekindle their friendship.

On Monday, Aug. 17, Twitter user @GomezIsland posted a screenshot of Gomez's Instagram status, which revealed that Lovato began following her. The fan wrote, "Demi Lovato followed Selena Gomez on her Instagram. DELENA is back everyone! I miss them."

Last year, Lovato was asked by Andy Cohen on "Watch What Happens Live" why she unfollowed Gomez on Twitter.

"I think it's just one of those things where people change and people grow apart," she said

The two singers met as young girls on the set of the children's show "Barney and Friends" back in 2002, which they appeared in for two seasons. After a few years, both girls were featured on TV shows on the Disney Channel, with Gomez starring in "The Wizard of Waverly Place" and Lovato nabbing the lead in "Sonny With a Chance." The two ladies also starred together in the Disney original movie "Princess Protection Program" in 2009.

Through the years, the girls went through challenging times in their personal lives, with Lovato having had experienced depression, an eating disorder, and self-harm before entering a treatment facility in November 2010. Gomez also went through some trying times as she voluntarily entered a facility for young adults "struggling with emotional trauma" last year.

These days, both ladies are doing well as both of them have released new music, and Gomez has also filmed two movies earlier this year. Lovato has recently created the Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program, which aims to pay treatment costs for mentally ill patients. She is also in a loving relationship with actor Wilmer Valderrama, and they have been dating since 2010.

Lovato and Gomez will be reunited this Friday at "We Day," an ABC special hosted by Gomez, which, according to Entertainment Weekly, will encourage young people to learn about social issues from bullying to body image to the environment, and will feature Lovato as one of the guests. The special will air on Aug. 21 at 8 p.m.
