A newborn baby has been rescued from a sewage pipe in China on Saturday.

The baby boy was rescued from a four-inch wide pipe by firefighters in Jinhua city, Zhejiang province in China. The rescue took around two hours.

The boy was discovered after residents heard cries. Reports say the baby was flushed down the toilet. Another source claimed that the mother alerted police saying she gave birth unexpectedly in the lavatory.

The 22-year-old unmarried woman had reportedly hidden her pregnancy and called her landlord, claiming that she heard weird noises in the pipe. The landlord called police after realizing that a newborn baby was trapped underneath the pipe.

"The woman was on the scene during the entire rescue process ... and admitted (she was the mother) when we asked her," the police man said, according to The Evening Standard. "We need further investigations to find out if she had any malicious intentions."

The mother of the baby, who is in serious condition after complications from delivering the baby, may face charges and authorities are still looking for the father of the infant.

The baby is reportedly very healthy now and can be released from hospital.

The case has sparked anger on China's social media network, Sina Weibo.

One user wrote: "The parents who did this have hearts even filthier than that sewage pipe."
