'Agents of SHIELD' season 4 spoilers: Clark Gregg discusses Coulson's new role

ABC

"Agents of SHIELD" season 3 ended with the main group going their separate ways after the defeat of Hydra and HIVE (Brett Dalton). Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Clark Gregg teases what his character, Agent Coulson, will be up to and what role he will have when the series returns for season 4.

At the end of season 3, a six-month time jump revealed that Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) had gone rogue, and Agent Coulson was no longer associated with SHIELD. According to Gregg, Coulson is going to be in a very low state of mind given the circumstances.

"He's not the director anymore, his destiny is not so much in his own hand as it used to be," explained Gregg. "The person he cares about is on the run and seems to be very sought after by the authorities. It's very much changing the game for Coulson. Certainly from that teaser of where we'll be next season, he does not seem to be in good shape."

Screen Rant reports that Coulson will have his hands full in season 4 as he not only needs to grieve for Lincoln's death and Daisy's decision to defect from SHIELD but also with the birth of the Life-Model Decoys aka LMDs, which were developed by Holden Radcliffe (John Hannah) and introduced during the season 3 finale.

The report also points out that one of the biggest mysteries that season 4 will need to solve is the now vacant position of SHIELD Director. Before Coulson was appointed as the new Director, this position was held by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), until Hydra attempted to murder Fury and disassemble SHIELD in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

ABC has not yet officially announced a premiere date for "Agents of SHIELD" season 4, but the series is expected to launch this coming fall presumably in late September or early October.
