There is only one episode left for "Wayward Pines" and tension is at its height. The penultimate episode ended with a cliffhanger where David Pilcher (Toby Jones) shut off the power, allowing the monstrous aberrations or "Abbies" into the town after Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) revealed the truth to the townsfolk.
The promotional trailer for the finale episode titled "Cycle" showcases Ethan, his wife Theresa (Shannyn Sossamon), and Kate Hewson (Carla Gugino) leading the residents in a war for their survival. According to a report from CarterMatt, a majority of the episode will focus on the battle between humans and the aberrations.
According to the official synopsis, Nurse Pam (Melissa Leo) will also confront her brother about his actions that could lead to the annihilation of the human race. The previous episode revealed that Pam shares sympathies with many of the residents and workers of Wayward Pines, sympathies that conflict with the views of her brother.
Wayward Pines' last hope rests on the fate of the children, known as the First Generation, and according to the synopsis for the finale, they will be taking things into their own hands in order to ensure their survival.
If the finale is anything like the books, then it is likely that many people will die before the battle is over, cites a report from the IBTimes. [Spoiler Warning] According to the report, the book series ends with the townsfolk fighting off the aberrations, restoring power, exiling David Pilcher outside the fence, and then going through cryogenic sleep for another 70,000 years, hoping they awake to a more habitable world.
Also according to the IBTimes, lead actors Matt Dillon, Melissa Leo, and Carla Gugino have not yet signed on for a second season. If Fox picks the show up for another run, it is possible that "Wayward Pines" will have to go on with a new set of characters or perhaps focus on other survivors from the First Generation.
Episode 10 of "Wayward Pines" will air Thursday, July 23, on Fox.
