Unborn babies can still be saved if a pregnant mother has a change of heart and decides to keep her child after taking an abortion pill, thanks to a procedure now being practised by pro-life doctors.

Dr. Matt Harrison is only one of the over 270 physicians worldwide who is part of the Abortion Pill Reversal program of the Culture of Life Family Services, which can be contacted through a 24-hour hotline.

These doctors perform a reversal procedure that involves giving the pregnant woman who already ingested the abortion pill mifepristone (scientifically known as RU-486) with a heavy dose of progesterone, the pregnancy hormone.

Progesterone is said to be effective in countering the deadly effects of the abortion pill.

"These are hormones that essentially the woman's body has anyway, and we're just supplementing that," explained Harrison, an abortion reversal pioneer.

So far, 87 mothers who undertook the abortion reversal procedure delivered healthy babies, he said, with another 74 women currently expecting.

Harrison developed the abortion reversal procedure nine years ago when a pregnant woman asked him for help after taking the first abortion pill.

Harrison shared how he was moved when the pregnant mother told him, "I will do whatever it takes to save my baby."

After hearing this, the physician excused himself to pray.

"That was just such a powerful message coming from someone who had just taken a medication to end her baby's life and realised immediately that she had done something that she didn't want to do," he said.

To help the pregnant woman, Harrison thought of using a protocol already being practised for fertility treatments. The procedure takes advantage of the two-day gap between the taking of the first and second abortion pill.

The abortion reversal procedure must be performed within three days after taking the abortion pill, and before taking the second.
