Tens of thousands heard the gospel in Myanmar this weekend as evangelist Franklin Graham preached in Yangon.

More than 50,000 people attended the Love Joy Peace Festival at the Myanmar Convention Center from Friday to Sunday. The heavily Buddhist country has been embroiled in the world's longest running civil war since 1949.

On the first day of the three-day festival around 46,000 attended with more than 2,500 becoming Christians by the end of the day, according to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

The second day saw 52,000 come with Franklin Graham preaching. The son of the great evangelist Billy urged people to "come home", and more than 2,400 responded.

"This is a wonderful picture of our Heavenly Father loving and welcoming us when we turn to Him in repentance," said Graham on Facebook.

"I am so thankful that thousands of men, women, and young people in Myanmar have responded to the invitation to 'come home' and trust Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of their lives.

"I thank God for working and give Him the glory. We know there was great celebrating in Heaven over each one!"

Graham also used the visit to Myanmar, also known as Burma, to distribute shoeboxes of gifts from his charity Samaritan's Purse's Operation Christmas Child appeal.
