Same-sex marriage will eventually destroy America, warns Alabama chief justice

The chief justice of Alabama has lashed out against same-sex marriage, saying it will end up destroying the United States as a nation.

Chief Justice Roy Moore also warned that if the US Supreme Court upholds gay marriage through the Obergefell v. Hodges case in a decision that is expected to come out this month, it will destroy the institution of marriage.

"What [the court is] doing is they're toying with something that's like dynamite and will destroy our country," said Moore in an interview with CNS News last week.

He said if the Supreme Court decides to side with same-sex marriage, the act will "not redefine marriage but destroy the institution of marriage," as he cited the Murphy vs Ramsey decision in 1885 where it was held that marriage is the union between a man and a woman.

"For certainly no legislation can be supposed more wholesome and necessary in the founding of a free, self-governing commonwealth, fit to take rank as one of the co-ordinate States of the Union, than that which seeks to establish it on the basis of the idea of the family, as consisting in and springing from the union for life of one man and one woman in the holy estate of matrimony; the sure foundation of all that is stable and noble in our civilization; the best guaranty of that reverent morality which is the source of all beneficent progress in social and political improvement," a part of the decision reads.

Moore said he sees an attempt to destroy the institution of marriage through same-sex marriage.

"I think there's an attempt to destroy the institution of marriage and I think it will cause, literally cause, the destruction of our country or lead to the destruction of our country over the long run. And I think there are people who would like to see this country destroyed," he said.

He added, "I'm not saying that everyone who's homosexual wants to see the country destroyed. I'm not saying that. I'm saying there's a push for it."

In Alabama, CNS reported, the state Supreme Court refuses to abide by a federal district court ruling that banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.

"The Alabama Supreme Court is not bound by any order of the federal district court. Just like they're not bound by any order we issue. They're parallel court systems," Moore said.
