"Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson took to the stage recently while campaigning for Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz in Iowa to express his distaste of homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

"When a fellow like me looks at the landscape and sees the depravity, the perversion—redefining marriage and telling us that marriage is not between a man and a woman? Come on Iowa!" Robertson said, according to 93.1FM WIBC.

"It is nonsense. It is evil. It's wicked. It's sinful," he said to enthusiastic applause from the crowd. "They want us to swallow it, you say. We have to run this bunch out of Washington, D.C. We have to rid the earth of them. Get them out of there."

For Robertson, the best man to do that job is Cruz. "Ted Cruz loves God, he loves James Madison and he's a strict constitutionalist. You know what Ted Cruz understands," Robertson said. "God raises these empires up. It is God who brings them down."

The reality TV star stressed that America has a "spiritual problem" and the only way to combat this is to put "godly" people in Washington so that Americans can "at least have God on their side."

"Cruz trusts God. Cruz trusts James Madison. That's why I trust Cruz," Robertson said. "You know what Iowa, that trumps (Donald) Trump."

When he went to the stage, Cruz did not refer to Robertson's anti-gay remarks but he did praise him for being the "voice of truth."

Despite being a close-knit family, Robertson and his son Willie are actually divided in their support of presidential candidates. Phil backed Cruz but Willie gave his endorsement to Trump.

"Mr. Trump is a real leader. He represents success and strength, two attributes our country needs. Like me, he is a successful businessman and family man and I endorse his candidacy for President of the United States," said Willie.
