A 22-year-old pastor is in critical condition after being shot in the head in a road rage incident in Florida.

10News identifies the victim as Steven Simon, of Straight Way to Heaven church in West Palm Beach.

The pastor was accompanied in the car by an unidentified 23-year-old female passenger who dialled 911 and described someone in another vehicle cutting them off before shooting at them.

"We're driving, and [inaudible] he cut us off," she told the dispatcher.  "Then, we kept driving, and he drove by us, then he cut us off again, and then he shot at us."

The incident happened on Interstate 95 between Hobe Sound and Stuart. Simon was reportedly flown by helicopter to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told 10News: "Unfortunately, road rage is becoming a part of our culture. People get upset where there was a slow down. It's just absolutely ludicrous to let a situation like this escalate."

The police are appealing to locals to come forward with information to help catch the attacker, who was described as a white male in his 50s or 60s, with white hair and driving a 1999/2000 beige or champagne-colored car.

Meanwhile, members of Simon's church have reportedly held prayer vigils as he continues to undergo treatment.
