Morgan Freeman, One of Hollywood's durable actors, has played various roles throughout his career, even portraying God in the films "Bruce Almighty" and "Evan Almighty."

Although that does not make him an expert on God and religion, the actor has expressed his desire to know more about the Creator through his new documentary called "The Story of God."

"I'm primarily interested in why, what is the why of it," the Academy Award-winning actor told Reuters. "I haven't found any answers yet. We're still in production."

"The Story of God" is a documentary made by the National Geographic and Highlight Films. It seeks to explore the depths of faith and theology. To do so, the production team behind the documentary flew to Jerusalem and visited the 4th-century Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It is the traditional site of Jesus' tomb. Many who have visited the place claim to have experienced Jesus' presence there.

Freeman and his group will also travel to other religious places in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Egypt, Guatemala, Turkey and India to prepare the documentary in time for its release in April next year.

In Jerusalem, Freeman's fame did not escape him. Locals and foreign tourists alike were drawn to the actor and asked to have their pictures taken with him, even as he tried his best to remain unnoticeable by wearing a panama hat and sunglasses.

His appearance offered a welcome distraction for the locals who have been weighed down by the religious strife hounding Jerusalem. The Palestinian unrest is causing Israel to beef up security particularly in the area where Jews revere their ancient temples.

When asked to make a comment about the conflict, Freeman declined. "I don't have a message for anybody. No, we're just here doing a documentary," he said.
