'Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain's' secret nuclear disarmament event triggered prematurely

"Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain" is available for free this month on PlayStation PlusFacebook/mgs

A secret nuclear disarmament cutscene in "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain" was triggered prematurely on Feb. 2.

Players of "Metal Gear V: The Phantom Pain" are encouraged to build, hoard and steal nuclear weapons through incentives from the game's base-building multiplayer mode. Nuclear weapons boost players' base defenses, but players also have the choice of opting for total disarmament.

According to Kotaku, the nuclear disarmament cutscene was discovered by players upon searching through the game's files. Furthermore, fans had apparently theorized that the event may be triggered once all the nuclear weapons of all the players of the game have been disposed of.

The nuclear disarmament cutscene was triggered on the PC version of the game on Feb. 2, but there's a catch: some players still have nuclear weapons. The cutscene features "The Phantom Pain's" characters declaring that the very last of the nuclear weapons in the world had already been destroyed. The cutscene was very somber with the characters promising to uphold nuclear disarmament by shutting down nuclear projects in the future. The cutscene continued with reminders on how grave the situation of the world is with nuclear proliferation at the present time, even quoting the former President Barack Obama's remarks in the Czech Republic in 2009, "Our efforts to contain these dangers are centered on a global non-proliferation regime, but as more people and nations break the rules, we could reach the point where the center cannot hold." The cutscene was published on YouTube in 2015 and can be viewed at this link.

The official Metal Gear Twitter account confirmed that the cutscene was indeed triggered prematurely and that the reason why it happened is still unknown. The tweet noted, "The nuclear disarmament event was triggered in the Steam version of METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN on Feb 2nd at approximately 12:00 GMT. We are still investigating, but can confirm that the event was triggered while the nuke count hadn't reached zero."
