People always daydream about celebrities living the good life and enjoying the glitz and glamour of their profession, but rapper Lecrae says this idea is nothing but an illusion.

Lecrae, best known for his songs "All I Need is You" and "Nuthin," even compares celebrity culture to high school, because many from the industry are actually very insecure.

"It's like there's the cool kids table, there's the jocks, there's the nerds, there's the skaters, whatever," he told HipHopDX recently. "It's just like high school and everybody's still just insecure just trying to fit in or trying to prove they got something going on."

Personally, Lecrae does not like to be associated with any of the cool kids, jocks, or nerds. The rapper marches to his own beat, and he has implemented this approach on his music as well.

"What I feel like in terms of my music is I want people to wrestle with the complexity of it and the beauty of the complexity and not just write it off like, 'I get what it is. It's just rap.' Or 'It's Christian.' Or 'It's indie.' Whatever," he said.

Lecrae said his music is "its own thing" and comes in "its own unique packaging." Hence, he was thrilled when his 2014 album "Anomaly" topped both the Billboard gospel music charts and the Billboard 200.

"I think that's why people want to win Album of the Year because that means it transcends all the little pockets. It's just good," he said.

Lecrae also talked about his new book "Unashamed," which will be released on May 3. In it, Lecrae details his troubled childhood and how he came to know God and started his career in music.

"It's probably the most exciting project I've ever worked on," he said. "We've put way more time, effort and energy. Lots of writing with different artists. Obviously there's more firepower, more involvement, lot more interest. People have expressed interest to where I'm blown away."
