JonBenet Ramsey 2013: Parents were indicted by grand jury but prosecutor refused to press charges due to lack of evidence [REPORT]

We all remember JonBenet Ramsey, the beautiful 6-year-old who was found dead in the basement of her home in 1996.

Her killers have never been caught and her death remains a mystery to this day.

Authorities had suspected JonBenet's parents, Patsy and John Ramsey, as suspects in the case. The parents initially reported that their child had gone missing on the tragic day, and that they had found a ransom note in their home at the time of her disappearance.

With no evidence to suspect her parents, they were eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.

However, according to a story published on Daily Camera this year, the grand jury had actually voted to indict her parents on charges of child abuse which resulted in death. The story states that the indictment was never carried out because District Attorney Alex Hunter had refused to sign it because of the lack of evidence.

Now the story is coming to light again as Charlie Brennan, the reporter who originally wrote the piece, is working to get the indictment released. He is working with the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press in a lawsuit against new Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett.

In the lawsuit, attorney Thomas B. Kelley wrote: "The plaintiffs believe... that the indictment is a criminal justice record that reflects official action by the grand jury, and accordingly that it is subject to mandatory disclosure upon request. Alternatively, they argue the indictment should be disclosed to the public because such disclosure would serve the public interest in government transparency and not be contrary to the public interest nor cause undue adverse effect upon the privacy of the individual."

However, the plea for the indictment to be made public has already been rejected twice.

Garnett said, "We will respond to the motion in a pleading in court. Protecting the integrity of the grand jury process is important to every district attorney."

John Ramsey is currently living in Atlanta, 17 years after the death of his daughter. Patsy Ramsey passed away in 2006 of ovarian cancer.

JonBenet Patricia Ramsey was an American child beauty pageant queen found murdered in the basement of her home on Christmas Day in 1996. Her body was found within 8 hours of her parents reporting her missing. She died after being struck on the head and strangled.

The unsolved case continues to garner huge media interest. Her parents were finally exonerated and cleared as suspects in 2008.
