Gloucester Cathedral is the first cathedral to host Jesus Christ Superstar within its walls this week.

A 200-strong cast is performing Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical every night until Saturday, with the aptly named Jon Moses in the title role.

Sharing the story of Christ's last week on earth through dance and song, it is the first time that a UK Cathedral has ever hosted the musical, and has already received rave reviews.

Moses, 29, who was spotted for the role after taking part in ITV's Superstar last year, says he is "daunted" to be playing the Messiah.

"There is a certain level of expectation and I feel there is a lot on my shoulders," he told the Gloucester Echo.

"On the other hand, the cast are amazing to work with; it has been like a warm blanket having so many people around you, and performing it in such an amazing building as Gloucester Cathedral is awesome; I feel very humbled.

"The sheer force and power of everyone singing is spine-tingling. It's going to blow people away."

Moses adds that the cathedral is the perfect stage for the performance to be set and has a special relevance for the plot.

"I've never performed anywhere like this before and I feel humbled," he said. "When you walk into the cathedral you can't help but feel a certain way and the acoustics are gorgeous.

"It's going to be an incredible production for Gloucester and I hope as many people as possible take the opportunity to come and see it."

The show starts at 7.30pm every night in addition to a matinee on Saturday at 2pm. Call 0845 652 1823 or visit www.tickets.gloucestercathedral.org.uk for tickets.
