Ghostbusters 3 movie rumors, cast update: Paul Feig to direct film?

For its 30th anniversary, Sony Pictures reportedly plans to reboot the hit 1984 film Ghostbusters under a new direction.Facebook

After 30 years, the big screen will feature Ivan Reitman's iconic film Ghostbusters once again, but this time, the Bridesmaids director Paul Feig will take the helm.

Feig became Sony's surprise choice to direct the third installment of the supernatural comedy series. However, sources claim that there were no formal deals agreed between the director and the film studio yet, and there is still a lot of work to be done before the negotiations between the two parties become serious and Feig officially accepts the task. Though Sony declined to comment, sources still claim that the director is the company's first choice.

Based on alleged reports, the film studio is planning to reboot the movie, with female stars on the lead.

The production of the much-awaited third Ghostbusters film suffered a major setback back in March when Reitman, who directed the original film back in 1984 as well as its lackluster sequel back in 1988, decided not to return for the third film after original Ghostbusters star Harold Ramis passed away in February this year.

In an interview with Toronto Life, Reitman was asked regarding his thoughts on a new Ghostbusters film without Ramis, and with Bill Murray who reportedly declined to appear in the film as well. The director said, "He's (Murray) publicly said no, but Bill and I have done six movies together, and he never says yes until literally just before the shoot. Two TIFFs ago, we had a late dinner at Sotto Sotto, and we ate and talked until 4:30 in the morning. I told him, "I don't care if you do Ghostbusters—I mean, I'd love it if you did—but why aren't you doing leading parts for big studio films?" He said he didn't want that responsibility. He wanted to be a character actor."

On the other hand, Dan Aykroyd will reportedly return for Ghostbusters 3.
